5 lessons from 5 years of freelancing
Freelancing is a great job, but not an easy one. After 5 years, here are the most important lessons I’ve learned.
1. Price right, not cheap
Cheap prices attract difficult clients and lousy projects. Price based on the value you bring, not the hours you work. As your rates go up, so does the quality of your clients.
2. Write clear contracts upfront
Scope, deadlines, change-request process, payment terms — all of it belongs in the contract. It protects both sides and saves headaches later.
3. Communication beats code
Great code without great communication still fails projects. Give regular updates, set expectations, and ask when unsure.
4. Say no to bad projects
Not every project deserves a yes. Vague scope, unrealistic budgets or disrespectful clients — turn them down. Your energy is limited.
5. Take care of yourself
Burnout is freelancing’s #1 enemy. Rest, exercise, and don’t overbook.
Freelancing is a long journey — you get wiser and more skilled every year.
